SPRING 2011…AN OPTIMISTIC & HAPPY FORECAST!
SPRING 2011 . . . AN OPTIMISTIC & HAPPY FASHION FORECAST!
by Edie Locke
What a cold, cold winter this has been! Freezing! Ice, snow! A white landscape. After shivering under layers of clothes…you deserve a break…a spring break…a Fashionable Spring Break! Balmy days are coming and so are clothes you’ll fall in love with…and have to have!
White Shirt by Paper White
And guess what? After a winter of snowy white (the kind that comes down in flakes)…one of spring’s big fashion message is snowy WHITE…spanking-clean white…in everything from pants, shirts and blouses to enchanting evening clothes. You’ll fall in love and have to have something WHITE.
And something in COLOR, COLOR, COLOR…BRIGHTS spilling out of a box of crayons. Bright blues, yellows, greens, hot pinks, oranges, turquoises, reds and purples. Dare to combine more than one of the brights in one outfit…two or even three…tossing
together a sizzing pink T with orange trousers, the waist belted or sashed in deep sky-blue or grass green. Experiment! And all those neon brights can work with something black, something white. Prints are color-blocked, geometrics, extravagant florals …splashy … drenched in color. Happy colors to make you feel optimistic, make you smile.

Next to those neon brights are SHADED PASTELS. Lovely and romantic. And the cool NEUTRALS : earth tones, sand tones, wood tones . . . looking doubly cool mixed with white. All the Starbucks coffee varieties…. from latte to cappuccino. And more neutrals: light tonal grays. Your new spring wardrobe needs something neutral, something bright, something white.

Good news: we’re finally liberated from skin-tight pants (except those legging staples!). BUT PANTS …. the mainstay of most wardrobes … are loosening up, getting wide and wider. There is a perfect pant shape for everybody and every body … from fluid trousers, to low-flared bell-bottoms , to the palazzos of the 70’s … a decade that’s a strong influence on 2011 spring fashion.
And for every pant there is the perfect topper : a GREAT BLOUSE or SHIRT…. a GREAT JACKET. It’s the return of the PANTS-SUIT !!! Pants-suits for day and for late-day.
The JACKET might be oversized and roomy… ( fashion is moving toward the voluminous) ….fitted and / or belted …. short and boxy….blouson-y . It may be tailored or soft … lapel-ed or shawl-collared … mandarin or cardigan. It may be safari-ish , equestrian . It may be cut like a short trench…or a tuxedo. You’ll want more than one in your closet…for day …and , depending on fabric, for evening. A new jacket is a must – have. … as is a BLOUSE.
Infinite varieties of BLOUSES : some closely wedded to a shirt, some with waterfall detail in front . Some with full, ballooning sleeves, some distinctly peasant inspired. Some with a bit of a ruffle … some touched with lace. Some draped and tied at the midriff … some tunic-length and flatteringly loose…like a big-shirt. And again: color matters. A bright color blouse, topping a pair of white fluid trousers may just turn out to be your warm-weather uniform !
Dress by Karen Klein
The day DRESS is a simple shift…. easy to top with a jacket. Or one with lots of flattering draping … softly wrapping the body. Nothing restricting.
Lots of bohemian touches… as in peasant-y maxi dresses.
For EVENING…chiffon layers, cocktail-short or big-evening long. Nothing see-through …wearable transparencies. Splashy, colorful prints move into night-time. And you’ll love the shining metallics … even metallic linen for evening jackets….evening suits.
Tom & Linda Platt
Whether skirts are slim or fluid and flared….the HEMLINES are inching SOUTH , inching DOWNWARD. The mini remains … as it should…with the young and leggy. Hemlines may stop just below the knee, top of calf , mid-calf and even close to the ankle. Your CHOICE.
CHOICE is the key word of our FASHION VOCABULARY now.
So many new ideas … new colors …. new ways to put pieces together.
You can go for stark and minimal … urban …. peasant-y …. romantic ….Victorian ….or give new combos a try. You’ll fall in love with the clothes of spring … after a hard winter. HAPPY CLOTHES… OPTIMISTIC ! SO … LIVE IT UP
