Holiday Gift Display at Merrick's

With everything else that did, or didn’t happen this past year, why not make this the year that you truly do get back to a old fashioned holiday?

We’ve all tightened our belts over the past months (even Santa is measuring a few inches thinner, we’ve heard), and that can be a blessing in disguise.  Make this the year you skip the mall nightmare, skip the overload, skip the stress….and enjoy the peace and beauty of this holiday season.

At Merrick’s we know that gift-giving is still an important part of the holidays. It tells our loved ones they’re in our hearts and minds and that we treasure them. It sends a special “thank you” to those who have helped or served us. It reminds a friend that we cherish their friendship.  When considered this way, gift-giving should be filled with joy, not stress, as we choose that “perfect thing” and anticipate the look on the recipients face when they open it.

It is with this philosophy in mind that my staff and I have made our store selections for the holidays.  We’ve filled our shelves with gifts of beauty and enchantment, wonderment and joy.  There’s something here for everyone – from your mother to your daughter; from your husband to your new born grandbaby; from your child’s teacher to your manicurist.

Recycled Book Handbags at Merrick’s Princeton

love-story_edit1love-story-spine_editI don’t know about you….but for me the book is always better than the movie! There’s just something about having that book in my hands, casting my own characters (me in the lead??), and imagining my own scenes and sequel that is just so much more….well...creative! Then when I’ve finished reading my book I can put

it on my bookshelf and and even if I never look at it again (other than to dust it) I remember it lovingly.  It becomes part of my very own story – from childhood on.  So how about this idea….how about if someone turns these books from my memories into beautiful, equisitly hand-crafted handbags?  Now I can carry my favorite titles with me as a form of self expression…a conversation starter….or just plain fun.  These are great, one-of-a-kind gift ideas too. And they are all hand made from original hardcover books that we cullef from our own library and found at yard sales, flea markets, etc.  The point is they were destined for the dustbin before being “rebounded”.  The original  covers and spines are preserved and then beautiful, high-quality fabric is used to create the flange and interior.  Each book is completely unique and takes  about 10 hours to make.  Our current collection includes titles by Jane Austin, The Bobbsey Twins, Love Story and more.

Images from PEI

The Racich family has just returned from an idyllic vacation at their home on Prince Edward Island, where John and Barbara have spent the last several years restoring an old potato farm. “There’s something magical about PEI,” says Barbara. “It has the most amazing light. If I were a painter, this is where I’d live”. This summer the Racichs enjoyed the company of friend Pam Kline, CEO of Traditions by Pamela Kline a fine linens company. Pam’s nearby home was the subject of a major photo shoot for Country Living magazine. Editor Jane Dagmi snapped an album full of photos which you can see on her blog: http://www.countryliving.com/janes-blog/In_Kline?click=main_sr
